Council considers electoral changes in Hastings Highlands

Hastings Highlands council is divided when it comes to requested election changes in the municipality.

In May, a delegation made a presentation to council members, asking it to introduce a municipality-wide voting system instead of having individual wards.

The delegation says some wards get the same representation as others, despite being half the size.

Some councillors are in support of keeping the ward system, saying no matter which ward votes them in, they serve the entire community.

Others say, since they do represent all Hastings Highlands residents, a municipality-wide election would make sense.

Ultimately, council has voted to have staff members prepare a report on the cost of getting public input on the matter.

Mayor Vivian Bloom points out, if a change were to occur, it would need to happen at least a year before the next municipal election.
