Local chamber of commerce looks to pay off debt to Bancroft

The Bancroft District Chamber of Commerce is asking the town to give up its First Right of Refusal on the Bancroft Railway Station.

The committee of the whole was presented with the request, with information it would help the Chamber pay off its debt to the town of over $51,000.

Manager Greg Webb says the chamber owns the Bancroft Railway Station, and the property it’s on.

The Right of Refusal gives the town of Bancroft the first chance to buy the building if the chamber wanted to sell it.

Bancroft Mayor Bernice Jenkins called the request a sign of desperation.

Town staff will be looking into what to do about the request, and will present information to council at a later date.
