OPP warns snowmobilers ice is never 100 per cent safe

Police are reminding you to be aware of ice conditions before heading out on a snowmobile.

This comes after a number of recent incidents, including a Mount Albert man who died after his snowmobile went through the ice on Pusey Lake in Highlands East.

The OPP says ice thickness is always changing, and even if you’ve tested it, it can never be considered 100 per cent safe to ride on.

You are being asked to check the weather, and avoid going out onto ice on warm or stormy days, never travel on ice alone or when it’s dark, and carry a survival kit, including ice picks, rope, a lighter and waterproof matches.
