Gallant concerned about Canada’s cuts to defence spending

The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP is concerned about an $8.5-billion cut in defence spending in 2017.

MP Cherryl Gallant has raised these concerns to the house of commons, saying the government is cutting these funds to dig itself out of a hole created in the last federal budget.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence says these funds will not be cut, but deferred until 2034, at which point the over $8-billion will be put into a number of projects. The country’s defence policy also sets out a 70 per cent increase in military spending over the next 10 years.

Gallant says this issue is important to her as the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa is in her riding.
