Secondary School Teachers’ Union disappointed with cuts in public board’s budget

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation District 29 is disappointed with cuts made in the local public school board’s 2017-2018 budget.

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board approved it’s over $223-million budget on Monday.

The school board says the budget includes steps to reduce permanent staff, consolidate and close schools, along with other savings as part of its Multi-Year Financial Recovery Plan. The plan was created to address a deficit of $2.5-million, which the board says was caused by increased expenses, like the administrative benefit plan, staff replacement, transportation, and legal work. The board also says the budget includes savings through further reductions to professional development and individual school budgets.

The local union says the board has decided to make cuts that will impact student success. These include cuts to secondary school budgets that support classroom learning, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, along with eliminating some teaching and front-line positions, while adding three new administrative positions.
