Township makes request for 24/7 paramedic services in Algonquin Park

The township of South Algonquin is calling for more support for emergency services in Algonquin Park.

The township has passed a resolution asking the Ministry of Health to consider providing paramedic services for Algonquin Park, which would operate 24 hours a day year-round.

Mayor Jane Dumas says the request is being made as South Algonquin’s paramedics, operating out of Whitney, currently have to fill the need in Algonquin Park. Dumas says the Ministry of Health is being asked to look at just how many people visit the park.

A resolution passed by council states that it would cost almost $3-million for South Algonquin to provide year-round 24-hour paramedic services, which is not sustainable based on its tax base. Dumas says, from May to October, the service in Whitney does operate 24 hours a day, but for the rest of the year, it’s an on-call service.

Dumas also points out that, when Whitney’s paramedics are called out to Algonquin Park, it affects surrounding municipalities as well.

The township is making the request to the Ministry of Health, but has also forwarded its resolutions to Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, MP Chery Gallant, and other municipalities for support. Hastings Highlands Council has already voted in favour of supporting the resolution.
