Province Increases Cancer Coverage for Firefighters

Workplace Safety and Insurance Act benefits have been extended for Ontario’s firefighters. Kathleen Wynne, Ontario’s Premier has announced that the province has added six more cancer types to the list of those presumed to be related to firefighting work. The change will allow firefighters and their families to get the support and care they need by making it easier to qualify for benefits under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. The changes will be retroactive to January 1, 1960, and apply to full-time, part-time and volunteer firefighters and fire investigators. Currently, there are about 450 fire departments in Ontario, with approximately 11,000 full-time firefighters, 19,000 volunteer firefighters and 200 part-time firefighters.
