Canada Day will be celebrated in Bancroft

Bancroft Council is happy that a private citizen’s group has taken on the organization of Canada Celebrations in Bancroft. Council has been informed that a committee has come forward to organize the daytime activities for Canada Day celebrations. Tracy McGibbon was identified as spokesperson for the committee. The plan is to have activities in Millennium Park similar to last year’s, with many of the same vendors and sponsors returning to assist. A parade is also being planned by Liz Ingles. Council debated the parade issue as there was some concern about closing down Hastings Street. The town sponsored Wheels, Water and Wings event goes just over a week after Canada Day and there was worry that the MTO may not agree to close a major highway so often in the same month. Council decided that they would wait for staff to get confirmation from the MTO about closing off the street before agreeing to a parade. They were in favour of the idea, but passed a motion that the Canada Day Parade would have to start at the Town offices on Flint Street and must end at Millennium Park. The motion said that the Town supported, in principal, the Canada Day Event and Parade and would provide some “in-kind” support subject to cost estimates and MTO permission to allow the closing of the street.
