Used Syringes are Dangerous

In the interest of public safety, the Bancroft OPP is reminding the public of the importance of disposing of used syringes properly. Improperly disposed syringes can lead to accidental puncture injuries that can develop serious illnesses. Syringes should be deposited into a “Sharps” container, which can be found at any pharmacy. If you do not have a sharps container, syringes can be collected in a hard plastic container, preferably with a narrow neck.  A lid should be used to close the opening and the container should be labelled. When they are full, containers holding syringes can be taken to any of the area pharmacies for disposal. When you are handling any syringe, gloves and tongs or pliers should be used to pick them up. Syringes and needles should never be thrown in the garbage, left on the ground or flushed down the toilet. If you see a syringe or needle in a public area you can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 for proper disposal. For more information on used syringes, how to recognize one or what to do if you are stuck by a needle, you can contact the Hastings and Prince Edward District Health Unit at 1-800-267-2803 or visit www.yourhealthunit.ca.
