‘Little Chefs of CKL’ Program Helps Children Develop Healthy Cooking Skills

Learning about “food literacy” is a primary focus of the Little Chefs of the City of Kawartha Lakes program, being offered by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit and other partners. Children aged six to 12 years learn how to prepare and cook a variety of healthy meals and the benefits of eating and using locally-grown food in their cooking creations, either by growing it themselves or purchasing it from local growers. Food literacy can include food shopping, understanding nutrition labels, following recipes, budgeting, planning menus and cooking healthy meals. It is about children developing the skills, understanding and confidence to make healthy and tasty meals for themselves, and eventually their own families.
