Local MPP says province needs to amend Safer School Zones Act

Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Todd Smith wants the province to make some changes to its proposed Safer School Zones Act.

The Liberal Caucus has recently claimed Smith had delayed the passage of the bill meant to target unsafe drivers and speeding to protect children. But Smith says one of the problems with the bill is it focuses on community safety zones, which can be anywhere in a municipality.

He says he would like to see the act amended to allow school buses to target unsafe drivers.

Smith also says the province could make the fines in community safety zones the same as those in school zones.

Smith also points out that the Liberal party currently holds a majority government in Ontario, so he can’t stop the bill from passing.
