OPP: Best way to combat cyber crime is through awareness

Police want to educate the public on how they can prevent cyber crime through awareness.

This comes as October is ‘Cyber Security Awareness Month.’ OPP says billions of dollars are stolen every year in Canada because of online fraud and victimization, but there are ways to prevent it.

Killaloe OPP Constable Catherine Yarmel says there are steps you should take before giving out your credit card number or financial information to a business.

Yarmel says other tips include remembering that chain letters and phony investment schemes make false promises of big returns.

Throughout October, OPP detachments across Ontario will be using social media to focus on the effects of cyber crimes, and educate the public on how to prevent them. You can find out more by using #CyberSecurity, #CyberAware and #OPPTips on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

You are also being reminded that, if you have been the victim of online fraud, to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or to report online to the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
