North Hastings Community Trust releases collaborative report on rural poverty

North Hastings Community Trust is calling on the province and those in power to address rural poverty in Ontario.

This comes as Community Trust has released a report on rural poverty, in collaboration with the Community Development Council of Quinte and Belleville, Frontenac Community Services, Table Community Food Centre in Perth, and Poverty Round Table Hastings Prince Edward.

Program Coordinator Jane Kali says the biggest issue driving rural poverty in Ontario is income insecurity.

Kali also says the increased cost of living is causing people to have to decide between housing, food, heating, and transportation.

Kali says the report will be forwarded to Premier Kathleen Wynne, and other members of provincial and federal governments. She says the hope is that this will prompt action to address the issue.

Kali says the report also outlines the need for all levels of government to keep the lines of communication open with groups working to address poverty in rural Ontario.
