No charges laid against Bancroft OPP officer after SIU investigation

A Bancroft OPP officer will not face criminal charges after an SIU investigation into an Amber Alert.

On April 18th 2016, local officers were made aware of an Amber Alert stemming from Aurora, in which a 35-year-old man allegedly abducted his four-year-old daughter. The man travelled through Bancroft, before crashing on Highway 41 near Pembroke later that day.

The man and his daughter were seriously hurt, sparking the Special Investigations Unit’s investigation which included statements from a number of civilian and police witnesses.

Director Tony Loparco released a report on the investigation earlier today, saying the man was not being chased by police at the time of the crash. Loparco says the driver had been reckless, and had disobeyed a number of traffic laws.

Police were ordered not to pursue the vehicle, and Loparco says there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against one of the Bancroft OPP officers involved in the case.

The SIU steps in during incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
