Highlands East estimates proposed legislation could cost taxpayers over $27,000

Proposed provincial legislation could cost Highlands East taxpayers over $27,000 next year.

That’s according to a financial report showing the impact of Bill 148, which proposes increasing minimum wage to $14 an hour by January. Highlands East Mayor Dave Burton says, unless there are changes to the legislation, it will cause serious problems for municipalities.

He says over $13,000 of the proposed increase would come from employees, firefighters, and managers getting extra pay for being on-call. Burton says he and many politicians are concerned.
