Haliburton’s health unit promotes fall prevention for kids

Parents and caregivers are being encouraged to take steps to prevent their young children and babies from falls.

That’s the message from the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, which says falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospital admissions for Canadian kids up to nine-years-old. Registered Nurse Kelly Taylor says the most common types of falls for young children are from furniture, stairs, and windows, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk.

The health unit also recommends keeping drawers closed and locked to prevent young kids from climbing onto tabletops and counters, along with keeping chairs or stools away from them. You are also encouraged to secure any furniture to the wall to make sure it doesn’t topple over if a child tries to climb up.

Taylor also says babies are at risk of being hurt because of a fall.

If you’re carrying a baby in a sling, carrier, or wrap, the health unit wants you to make sure they’re supported and snug. It’s also important to make sure they are securely strapped into car seats.
