Smith says province’s balanced budget is simply not true

The Prince Edward-Hastings MPP is calling the province’s claims of a balanced budget untrue.

This comes after the province has released its 2017 Fall Fiscal Update. In it, the province says it will balance the budget this year, as well as the next two years, to provide more funding to programs and services people rely on.

MPP Todd Smith says, according to a report by Ontario’s Auditor General, the government is using false figures to make it seem like the budget is balanced.

The province also pointed to a number of measures it has put in place this year to strengthen health care. One of these efforts is that OHIP will provide free prescriptions to everyone under 25 starting in January. Smith says, while it’s good to bring in new programs, the province should be using any extra funds it has to pay off Ontario’s debt.

The province has also pointed to its efforts to improving education, by providing free tuition to over 200,000 college and university students in Ontario. Smith says that while we want kids to have an education, we also want them to have jobs. He says the province’s plan to increase minimum wage will mean there are less jobs in Ontario for these students.
