Smith wants movable soccer goals to be anchored down

The Prince Edward-Hastings MPP wants to see laws introduced to require that movable soccer goals be anchored down across Ontario.

MPP Todd Smith has introduced legislation to the province, called the Garrett’s Legacy Act, to make that happen. The act is named after 15-year-old Garrett Mills, who died after an unanchored soccer goal tipped over and landed on his head.

Smith says the legislation is meant to prevent more kids from being hurt by these soccer goals, which can tip easily.

He says there are currently over 250,000 kids in Ontario that play soccer, a number which continues to rise.

Smith says it will be up to municipalities to ensure soccer goals in their communities are anchored down if the law passes.

The bill is being co-sponsored by Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala.

It is set to be debated on December 7th. Smith says he doesn’t know how long it could take to pass.
