Smith says PC party promises cuts to income taxes and hydro bills

The Prince Edward-Hastings MPP says the PC Party plans to make life more affordable for Ontarians.

This comes after Saturday’s PC convention, where the party presented its platform heading into next year’s provincial election. MPP Todd Smith says the party plans to cut middle class income taxes by 22.5 per cent by cancelling the cap-and-trade program.

However, the Liberal Caucus says the PC party will replace current climate change policies for businesses with new taxes that will be a burden on Ontario’s households. The caucus also says the Conservative party will end up cutting core services, like education and healthcare, in order to lower taxes. Smith says this will not be the case if the party is voted in, as it plans to run an $2.8-billion deficit in its first year. He says the party will start paying down the province’s debt in the years to follow.

The NDP says it supports the cap and trade program, but will make it more fair, effective, and transparent to reduce climate change, but also provide 25 per cent of the revenues to support communities and individuals.

Smith also says the PC party plans on reducing Hydro Bills in Ontario by 25 per cent.

The NDP says it will reduce hydro bills by around 30 per cent by bringing Hydro One back into public ownership and control, and permanently changing the system.

Smith also says the party plans on expanding access to broadband internet and natural gas into rural parts of the province.
