The Health Unit says that regular screening for breast cancer can detect the disease early on, when treatment is most effective. An estimated 9,500 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and 1,950 will die from it. Women 50 years of age and older can use the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) for free, to arrange regular screening, without a doctor’s referral. You can call the OBSP toll-free at 1 800 668 9304, or go to www.ontario.ca/screenforlife
