Bancroft Committee sets goal in hopes of bringing taxes down

Bancroft’s Infrastructure and Finance Committee is working to bring taxes down next year.

The committee has put forward a recommendation to council that expenses paid for through taxes be reduced by two per cent as part of next year’s budget. Acting Mayor Paul Jenkins says there’s no way to know if this will bring taxes down, due to a number of other factors beyond the town’s control.

Other factors include whether or not the local school boards and the county decide to increase the taxes the town has to pay. Jenkins says the move would not mean a cut to services.

Jenkins says it’s not a guarantee, but the goal is to get taxes to go down to keep the town competitive, and help attract more people.

The recommendation still needs to be discussed by Bancroft Council.
