Public school board staff taking more sick days

Employees at the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board are taking more sick days.

This comes after HPEDSB was one of four school boards audited as part of the Ontario Auditor General’s 2017 report.

In 2016, HPEDSB employees took an average of 11.5 sick days, up 22 per cent from 2012. Sick days for teachers climbed 27 per cent. The Auditor General also reports that expenses caused by these absences went up as well, and recommends tracking sick days to identify them earlier in order to lower the costs associated with them.

Director of Education Mandy Savery-Whiteway says these recommendations will be a focus in the New Year. She says the local board will continue to consider ways to support employee wellness and attendance.
