North Hastings Library Boards to consider sharing services

The Southern Ontario Library Service is working with communities in North Hastings on the future of its libraries.

That’s according to SOLS CEO Barbara Franchetto, who says the North Hastings area is in a unique situation right now, after three local library CEOs have announced their resignations since October. It started with Wollaston Public Library CEO Carolyn Henderson, who resigned in October. Since that time, Temple Cameron has stepped in to replace her.

In November, Bancroft Public Library CEO Chris Stephenson announced his resignation. This month, Hastings Highlands Public Library CEO Kimberley McMunn announced she would be quitting in January.

Franchetto says these types of resignations are not a trend being seen across Ontario. However, she does say libraries across the province, but especially in small communities, don’t have enough funding to meet demands.

Franchetto says SOLS staff is looking at the option of combining services in North Hastings under a ‘union library.’

Franchetto also says it’s important that Library CEOs, Boards, and Councils work together to ensure that their communities receive the best possible service.
