Local snowmobile club urges riders to stay off the ice

Local snowmobilers are being urged to be patient, and stay off local waterways for the time-being.

That’s the message from Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers Snowmobile Club President Stuart McDonald. He says it’s unsafe to ride on the ice because it’s very thin and unstable because of the fluctuating temperature.

McDonald says the club has received a number of calls from residents who have noticed snowmobiles on lakes in the area.

Although local waterways may appear to be safe to ride on, McDonald says they’re not whatsoever.

McDonald says it could be a while before it’s safe to ride on local lakes. He says conditions on the ice can change daily, so it’s important to be patient and let nature take its course.

Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers trails have not yet opened either. McDonald says crews are working on getting them ready for the snowmobiling season, and is asking riders to just be patient to keep themselves safe. You can find out which snowmobile trails are open by clicking here.
