Police want drivers to slow down to prevent collisions

Bancroft OPP is making sure everyone knows they need to slow down on the road during the winter months.

A banner has been put up outside the detachment, with the words ‘Reduce speed in winter conditions’ on it. It’s a joint initiative between the OPP, Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health, the Quinte Region Traffic Coalition, and the Ministry of Transportation.

Constable Philippe Regamey says the banner was put up because most crashes during the winter months are actually caused by drivers going too fast.

Regamey wants you to leave space between yourself and other vehicles so you have enough time to stop. He also says drivers should not suddenly jerk their steering wheels, no matter what comes out ahead of them.

Regamey reminds drivers that wildlife can pop-up anywhere in North Hastings, which is another reason to slow down.

He also says it’s important not to use cruise-control on wet, snowy, or icy pavement because it can cause you to spin-out.
