Highlands East wants to capitalize on Geocaching

Geocaching will be a major part of attracting tourists to Highlands East in 2018.

Geocaching is a game where people use a G.P.S. device to find various items scattered around an area. According to its data, 991 unique user I.D’s logged a cache last year, which in an increase of 288 compared to 2016.

Community Economic Development and Committee Coordinator Joanne Vanier says with visitors coming from as far as Switzerland coming for geocaching, Highlands East is recognized as a world renowned destination.

Vanier showed a report to council, which outlines where geocachers stayed in Highlands Eats, and where they ate.

Vanier says the Geocaching Committee is planning a day-long event in May but says the details are top secret for now.

Every year, Highlands East has a major geocaching event in May to mark the anniversary of the geo tour.
