Police warn of a new phone scam in Ontario

Bancroft OPP wants to let you know about a new form of fraud making its rounds in Ontario.

OPP says the scam involves someone pretending to be a retailer calling you to tell you that your credit card has been compromised. The scammer will tell you to call 911 or your bank, but when you hang up to do that, you’ll actually still be on the line with them. Then, they’ll ask you to transfer money into a different account.

While there have been five reported cases of this type of scam so far in Toronto, the Bancroft OPP says there have been no local victims yet.

OPP wants you to take steps to protect yourself from fraud. That includes never giving out personal information over the phone. Police say you should not believe a caller claiming to be with your bank or credit card company. If you’re concerned about what you’re being told, you should reach out to your bank directly. Remember that banks would never suggest that you transfer funds to an outside bank account to protect them.
