HPEDSB working to support multi-grade classrooms

Some teachers with three grades in their classrooms want some extra help to support their students.

These concerns were brought up during a recent Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Program and Human Resources Committee meeting. Director of Education Mandy Savery-Whiteway says teachers in these classrooms need to create lesson plans for each grade while supporting each student’s individual needs. They’re asking for more time to plan their lessons, along with more support from the board.

Savery-Whiteway says the board is working to make sure these teachers have the resources they need to do that.

Savery-Whiteway says the board also tries to let schools know about multi-grade classrooms as early as possible to help them plan.

These classrooms exist at Hermon, Maynooth, and Coe Hill public schools, along with schools in Belleville and Trenton. Savery-Whiteway says it’s because of the small number of students.

Multi-grade teachers receive no extra Ministry of Education funding.
