Province announces funding to address gender-based violence

Maggie’s Resource Centre says the province is putting a lot of money into addressing gender-based violence.

The province has announced $242-million will be put towards a strategy to end many forms of violence against women. These include domestic violence, sexual violence and harassment, and human trafficking.

Maggie’s Resource Centre Executive Director Tanya MacKinnon says one of the province’s efforts will be to increase funding for victim services. MacKinnon says organizations in the region will get a share of the funding, but doesn’t know just how much will be coming to Maggie’s.

MacKinnon says the province will also fund public education campaigns on gender roles. She says this will help promote the importance of gender equality, and do away with some myths that still exist in communities like those in North Hastings.

The provincial strategy also includes steps to give free legal advice to sexual assault victims, and allow for earlier intervention for youth who have been through violence.
