Bancroft wants province to sell works yard and reimburse treatment plant costs

Bancroft is calling on the province to make a deal on the town’s public works yard.

Mayor Paul Jenkins says staff is making its case to the province about why the current building should be sold to the town, although he could not say for how much.

Jenkins says the town could build a new yard for less than it’s currently paying to lease the current one. The cost to lease the building rose by over $100,000 at the end of 2015, which Jenkins calls unreasonable. He says the goal is to cut down operating costs, which could help lower taxes.

The town is also asking the province to reimburse some of the costs related to building Bancroft’s waste water treatment plant.

Jenkins says the province had told the town to design the treatment plant so that it could service 10,000 septic systems. When the province decided against making this a requirement, the plant had to be redesigned. Jenkins says the town wants to be reimbursed for more than $600,000 spent on doing this.

Jenkins says the town has officially made the requests to the province, and is waiting to hear back. Once the province responds, he says the documents will be made public.
