HPEPH says free prescriptions for seniors will remove barriers

Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health calls free prescriptions for seniors a step in the right direction.

This comes as the province has announced Ontario’s seniors will no longer have to pay a deductible for prescription drugs starting in August, 2019. They will be able to get free medication with a prescription and an OHIP number.

Public Health Physician Piotr Oglaza says this is important locally because of Hastings County’s high senior population. Oglaza says this will help remove the burden for those living on fixed-incomes, who may also have to pay for food, rent, and hydro.

According to the province, this is part of an expansion to the current OHIP+ program. Oglaza says this will also give seniors the ability to make healthier choices.

The province says Ontario’s seniors will save an average of $240 a year once the expanded OHIP program is rolled out.
