Feds Introduce New Laws for Pipeline Safety

Daryl Kramp, MP for Prince Edward-Hastings, is suporting the new Pipeline Safety Act just introduced. Kramp says that the new act will increase the number of annual pipeline inspections and audits conducted by the National Energy Board (NEB) and strengthening the Board’s enforcement abilities. The bill would make all companies liable for costs and damages, regardless of who was at fault, for up to $1 billion for major oil pipelines, and companies will continue to have unlimited liability when that are at fault or negligent. The NEB would also be able order reimbursement of any cleanup costs incurred by governments, communities or individuals. Kramp linked the improvements to pipeline safety to the Government of Canada’s plan for Responsible Resource Development.
