Hastings Highlands Council holds off on decision to limit use of fireworks

Hastings Highlands Council wants more information before it makes a decision on a draft fireworks bylaw.

During Wednesday’s meeting, council voted to hold off on passing the bylaw which would govern how fireworks can be used in the municipality. Mayor Vivian Bloom says council felt some changes still need to be made, along with more discussion, before the bylaw can be passed.

One of the measures included in the draft bylaw is to only allow for fireworks on 18 days of the year; the days of, before, and after New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day, Canada Day, American Independence Day, the Civic Holiday, and Labour Day. Bylaw Enforcement Officer Dawn Bowers says some councillors were concerned about these restrictions.

Bowers says councillors talked about expanding the current noise bylaw so fireworks couldn’t be used after 11:00pm, instead of limiting the number of days.

Another measure included in the bylaw would restrict you from using fireworks in the municipality unless you’re 30 metres away from any shoreline. Bowers says one of the reasons some councillors were concerned about this is because being close to the water can be the safest place to let fireworks off.

Bowers says she will work on the recommended changes, and will bring back an amended fireworks bylaw for council’s meeting on May 30th.  She says she just wants to put forward something that everyone can agree on.
