Wollaston proposes tax decrease in draft budget

Municipal property taxes in Wollaston could be going down this year.

The township’s 2018 draft budget was presented to residents during a special council meeting on Tuesday. Clerk Jennifer Cohen says the township is currently proposing a 0.3 per cent annual drop in taxes.

The township’s 2018 draft budget includes $2.5-million in expenses, with $1.3-million coming from taxes. Cohen says a $64,000 boost from the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund has helped the township offset how much money it needs from taxes.

The biggest expense for the municipality is $1.2-million set aside for roads. Cohen says part of that will be put towards repairing a stretch of Highway 620 from the township’s east end to Lower Faraday Road.

The township will be putting money it has saved over the past two years, along with gas tax and Ontario Community Infrastructure funding, towards the project.

Cohen says staff worked hard to prepare the budget which she calls very fair. The budget is expected to be approved during council’s meeting on May 8th.
