Hastings Highlands declines union library proposal

Hastings Highlands will not be taking part in a union library.

The municipal library board announced its decision, which came out of Wednesday’s meeting. The idea being pitched to five communities in North Hastings would have seen a single board and CEO for all of the libraries.

Hastings Highlands Library CEO Rod Moffatt says the board listened to public opinions and weighed its options before making the decision. Moffatt says one of the reasons for declining is that the board did not want the library to lose its identity and autonomy when it comes to local decision making.

Moffatt says the board was also concerned that moving towards a union library would be a huge workload to take on.

Moffatt says libraries in the region can still work together and share resources without amalgamating. He says the board is happy with its decision, and will carry on doing what it does.
