Syrian refugee family to arrive in Bancroft by July

A Syrian refugee family will be arriving in Bancroft in the coming months.

Social Justice Without Borders has announced the Jarad family will be flying into Toronto on June 28th. They will stay with family for a few days, before making the drive up to Bancroft. Committee Chair Judy Edgar says she is very excited that the family of five will finally get here after two years of working towards this. The committee has raised $37,000 to support the family for a year.

Edgar says the big work begins now.

Edgar says there is still a need for volunteers to help with transportation and to take the family shopping.

Amir and Mariam are the parents of three children, eight-year-old Sara, six-year-old Nawar, and two-and-a-half-year-old Farah. Edgar says the kids are registered for the Experience Summer Camp to help immerse them into the area.

She says she is also concerned because the family could be in store for a bit of a culture shock.

Leading up to their arrival, a ‘welcome wagon shower’ will be held to top up on things the family needs, and let the community know about what it will be like to have them living here. A registry has been set up at some local businesses if you’d like to pick something up for the family. The shower starts at 5:00pm this Friday at St. John’s Anglican Church in Bancroft, and will feature a potluck dinner.
