OPP: Have a plan and kit ready in case of emergencies

Bancroft OPP is reminding you to be ready in case of an emergency.

This week is being recognized as Emergency Preparedness Week in Ontario, and police says it’s a great opportunity for you and your family to get ready. Constable Philippe Regamey says it’s important to sit down with your family to come up with a strategy in case of an emergency.

Regamey says police do have protocols in place to keep 911 services up and running during emergencies. But, the OPP also wants you to have kits prepared so you can be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. Regamey says it can be something as simple as a container filled with supplies that you can use.

– A flashlight.

– Spare batteries.

– A solar panel to charge batteries.

– A first-aid kit.

– A phone that can work during a power disruption.

– Candles.

– Matches or a lighter.

– Non-perishable food.

– A manual can opener.

– Bottled water.

– Extra clothes and shoes.

– Blankets or sleeping bags.

– Toiler paper.

– Medication.

– A whistle.

The OPP says the emergency kit in your vehicle should be stored in a safe place, and should include:

– A flashlight with batteries.

– A light, collapsible shovel.

– Candles.

– Matches.

– Blankets.

– Bottles of water and non-perishable food.

– Booster cables or a battery pack.

– A whistle.

– A rain poncho.
