Domestic Disputes Concerns OPP

Every year numerous children are witnessing domestic disputes and violence in their homes. The long-term effect could be that many of these children will themselves be involved in domestic disputes, continuing the cycle of violence. Most experts believe that children who are raised in abusive homes learn that violence is an effective way to resolve conflicts and problems. They may replicate the violence they witnessed as children in their teen and adult relationships and parenting experiences. Boys who witness their mothers’ abuse are more likely to batter their female partners as adults than boys who have lived in nonviolent homes. For girls, adolescence may result in the belief that threats and violence are the norm in relationships. If you or someone you know is involved in an abusive relationship help is available. Call Maggie’s Resource Centre at 613 332 3010, or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. You could also call the hospital, your doctor, or a trusted friend or family member. In an emergency call 9-1-1.
