HPEPH confirms mumps case in region

You are being urged to make sure you’re immunized against mumps.

That’s according to Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health, after receiving a confirmed case of the disease in the counties. Where exactly it was found in the region could not be confirmed. Program Manager Bill Sherlock says two-thirds of people who get mumps will show some symptoms of it.

The disease is not fatal, and you will likely recover if you get it. Sherlock also says you can catch mumps if you come in direct contact with the saliva of an infected person.

Sherlock says this is the only case of mumps in the area at this time. While there were over 200 cases of it in Ontario last year, he says it’s very rare locally. But to keep it that way, the health unit wants you to make sure you have the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. You can get it for free through the health unit or your local physician.
