Take steps to protect yourself from bug bites in Algonquin Park

If you’re heading up to Algonquin Park, you have to be ready for bugs that bite.

Black fly season is underway in the park, and will continue until the end of June. Once they’re gone, deer, horse, and stable flies, along with biting midges, will make their return for the rest of the summer months. You will also run into mosquitoes in the park.

Assistant Superintendent Rick Stronks says it’s a good idea to protect yourself from bug bites if you’re planning a trip to Algonquin Park. He says the key is to dress appropriately.

He says insect repellent can also help.  Even if you don’t like putting it on your skin, you can put it on your hat or clothes which will have a similar effect. Stronks says planning when and where you’re going to spend time outside is also important.

Although some mosquitoes in Ontario have been known to carry illnesses like West Nile Virus, there have not been any reports of it in Algonquin Park. But Stronks says that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. There are also no reports of ticks carrying Lyme disease in the park, but it’s still a good idea to be aware and protect yourself from the parasites. Once again, Stronks says the trick is all in how you dress.
