Hastings Prince Edward Public Health: West Nile Virus is Still a Concern

Usually, we swat away Mosquitoes when they get close, but Hastings Prince Edward Public Health says we need to be more careful around them.

For the first time in 2018, HPEPH have reported that some mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus. Senior Public Health Inspector with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health Andrew Landy says that making sure you’re covered up is important.

Along with covering up, Landy added that with bug sprays the most effective ones have DEET (N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) and Icaridin in them. He says to check the label for them when buying spray. He added that while most people just spray it on, you should be reading the directions carefully before applying spray.

The risk of getting infected is low, but Landy added that you should still be mindful of how you react to a mosquito bite.

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health says the common symptoms include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache and sudden sensitivity to light.
