The Northern Outdoor Studies Open House

The Northern Outdoor Studies (NOS) Program at North Hastings High School held their annual open house on Tuesday evening. It was well attended by students, staff, Instructors, program supporters and the general public. There were also representatives of the school board present. The NOS program provides students in grade s 11 and 12 the skills necessary to go directly into the workforce in areas such as environmental, natural resource and wildlife management or commercial logging. There are also options to further their studies at colleges or universities. Students can earn up to 12 certifications in areas such as First Aid, Hunter Safety, Work Place Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Volunteer Search and Rescue and Professional Chainsaw Operator. Students of the program were positioned at a number of stations demonstrating their skills and activities ranging from building and setting up duck nesting boxes, deer harvest surveys, outdoor survival, to skinning a beaver. The visitors were welcomed and had a great opportunity to talk to the students, staff and instructors of the program.
