Dementia is Ontarians’ Biggest Concern as They Age

A new report says that cognitive decline is a big concern for Ontarians as they age.

The report from the Alzheimer Society of Ontario surveyed 1,000 CARP members with 67-percent saying Dementia or cognitive decline is a top concern to them as they age. Maureen Corrigan, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward, says that people are concerned because they know how much Dementia can affect someone’s life.

Corrigan adds that we need to work on reducing the stigma attached to Dementia. She says there is still a lot people with the disease can do to help their communities.

Also in the survey, 97-percent of the CARP members that were polled said that it’s important for the Government to invest in a Provincial strategy to tackle the challenges faced by Ontarians with Dementia and their families. Corrigan says she wants to change that.

Corrigan says her goal is to help make sure people are prepared to face the challenges that Dementia brings. Dementia is a disease that can negatively change lives, but she wants people to know there are support groups that can help you through it. There is a lot of fun to be had, things to learn and support to come to anyone that has been diagnosed with Dementia, she says.

The Alzheimer Society does have an office in Bancroft at 1 Manor Lane.
