Man Arrested for Speeding Snowmobile in Downtown Haliburton

Haliburton OPP tried three times to stop a speeding snowmobile before making an arrest. The suspect was first noticed speeding through the downtown area of Haliburton. The driver ran a stop sign and failed to stop for police in a cruiser. Police did not pursue the suspect for safety reasons. Officers located the suspect on Cowan Road, but he did not stop for police and fled a second time. Police were able to track the snowmobile to an unmarked trail where the suspect ran towards officers and forced them to jump out of the way to safety. The snowmobile then lost control and hit a tree. The driver tried to flee by foot, but was caught by officers and arrested. The suspect driver, a 31 year-old Dysart et al man, was discovered to have been drinking. He was served with a three day driver’s licence suspension and charged with: Dangerous operation of motor vehicle, flight from police, failing to comply with a recognizance, driving without insurance and driving a motorized snow machine without a permit. He is to appear in a Minden court in March.
