Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health Warn you to be Careful Around Bats

You may think they’re cute, but Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health warn you that you shouldn’t be hanging out with Bats.

Bats could be more dangerous than the other animals you see around Bancroft. That’s what Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health Senior Public Health Inspector John Cannan is saying.

Cannan says that Bats like quiet, isolated places like caves or barns. He adds that they also tend to like older, run down houses or attics. He went on to say that Bats, like many animals, won’t bother you if you don’t bother them.

With the risk of Rabies, Cannan says that, like with any animal bite, you need to get it checked out right away. He says, though, that there are things you should do immediately after being bitten.

Cannan said that if you do come into contact with a bat, don’t try and touch it. It’s recommended that you try to get the bat into one room with only a window or door to the outside open.

Cannan added that the best way to “Bat-proof” your house is to seal along roof lines.
