Bancroft Town Council Meeting

Bancroft Town Council met on Tuesday with a full agenda. The Mayor opened the session with a memorial to the late George Tenthorey, the last Reeve of Dungannon Township. There were also several celebratory moments during the day. A number of town staff was recognized with certificates of appreciation for their service: Pat Hoover, five years as Fire Chief, Greg Maxwell, Perry Kelly and Dale Shannick were recognized for ten years of service to the town and Mike Moines was thanked for his 25 years of service.
The Mayor presented two Ontario Heritage Trust Certificates also. The first went to Frank and Wendy Melanson for their work through the Bancroft Gem and Mineral Museum towards the revamping of the Old Train Station. The second was presented to Mike Daly, the President of the Board of Directors of the Bancroft and District Chamber of Commerce, for the efforts made by the Chamber in the preservation of the Train Station.

After several amendments to the original motion, Bancroft Council voted in favour of having the audio of open meetings of council recorded. There was some concern as to how the recordings should be made, where would they be stored, how they would be made available to the public and other issues such as security. Council then referred the matter to staff to develop a report and report back to council.

A presentation was made to Bancroft Council on Tuesday about the plans for the former Bancroft Public School. Mr. Eric Toupin, who represented the owners, gave a brief outline as to what the initial plans are. Toupin noted that detailed plans were still in the making. He did, however, reveal that the intent is to convert the two stories of the main building into a total of 16 suites and put two more suites into what was the gymnasium. Three 4-plexes are also planned for the north side of the property, but at a later date. The main building will also have two guest suites and a common room. No exact dates are available, but Mr. Toupin promised to return to council with updates.
