With Rain Coming and the Weather Taking a Positive Turn, it was Safe to Lift the Total Fire Ban in North Hastings

After over a month of being under a total fire ban, the ban in North Hastings was lifted yesterday.

Fire Chief Pat Hoover says that there’s a lot of factors that come into play when pulling a total fire ban. Hoover says a big factor is the that’s forecasted for today and early next week. He says that, along with the rain coming today, the dewy, cool overnight weather and the days becoming shorter came into factor as well.

Hoover added that having resources like the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry being freed up came into factor as well. With the fires in Algonquin Park under control and the Provincial fire restriction lifted, the MNRF aren’t stretched as thin as when the total fire ban was first put into place. Hoover said that after the MNRF lifted the fire restriction late last week, he and the rest of the Fire Chiefs in North Hastings met Tuesday to discuss lifting the total fire ban.

A daytime burn ban is now in affect for all of North Hastings. However, there are restrictions that have been put in place. Only small campfires are allowed. Large fires for brush piles or yard waste aren’t allowed. Since the total fire ban was in place for so long, Hoover says that this is just a precaution to make sure people don’t flock to burning the waste that’s piled up over the last month.

Hoover says it’s all based on common sense. He says that if you lit the match, you are responsible for the fire.
