Police Say 9-1-1 is for Emergencies Only

The OPP is reminding the public not to call 9-1-1 unless there is an emergency to report. On Tuesday morning, someone living on Morrison Road, in Madoc Township called 9-1-1 because they did not know who to call about a power outage. This type of call could tie up the 9-1-1 lines delaying responses for real emergencies. Police say that an emergency is any situation in which the safety of people or property is at risk and requires immediate assistance, such as fire, a crime in progress, or a medical emergency.
For non-emergency calls to the OPP, call 1-888-310-1122 (toll free anywhere in Ontario) or 1-888-310-1133 (TTY) for the hearing impaired.

To report a Power Outage, Fallen Tree Hazard or Emergency, 24 Hours a day, call Hydro One at 1 800 434 1235.

To get information about road conditions and closures, you should call the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) at 5-1-1 or the province-wide toll-free number 1 800-268 4686.
