Council Approves Contractor for Winter Maintenance

The decision on who will be covering winter maintenance in Bancroft was made at council today.

A request for proposals was sent out a week and a half ago for contractors to apply to do winter maintenance this season. This came after Public Works Manager Perry Kelly proposed the work be kept in-house this season. At council earlier this month the motion to do the work in-house was defeated and council asked Kelly to send out an RFP.

At council today, Kelly announced two contractors put in bids. Council decided the contract they would go with is local company Basil Cox & Sons. Kelly mentioned that he also works on winter maintenance in Faraday. Kelly says it would cost the town $80,000. Mayor Paul Jenkins added that last year’s contract with a different contractor cost $114,000, meaning the town saves $36,00 with this new contract.

The town will still be supplying salt and sand for the new contractor. Kelly says around $80,000 is budgeted for this, but the cost depends on the harshness of the winter.

Council unanimously passed this motion.
