Thanksgiving Long Weekend OPP Campaign Wraps Up

Bancroft OPP were busy over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

That’s because they were busy out on the roads enforcing the “Big 4” factors involved in motor vehicle collision deaths: distracted driving, aggressive driving, impaired driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

“We were definitely busy,” OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says about the weekend. Officers responded to 62 calls for service over the weekend. 11 of the calls were because of the heavy traffic coming through Bancroft. Regamey says 23 Provincial Offenses Notices were laid over the weekend, which he says were mostly due to aggressive driving.

Across Ontario, OPP are calling this past Thanksgiving long weekend “one of the deadliest Thankgiving weekend in recent history.” There were two triple fatality collisions. They both happened on Saturday, with the first collision happening near Port Perry with three people dying as a result and two others being injured. The second collision happened near Guelph with three dying after two vehicles crashed.

Overall, the OPP report 6,934 charges were laid over Thanksgiving long weekend. 5,295 of those charges were for speeding, the OPP say.

Regamey says that not getting ticketed for a “Big 4” offence is simple: don’t drive distracted, buckle up before you start driving, stay under the speed limit and to always driver sober, which includes not driving while high.
